Advisory Group member, Christine Ross, spoke on behalf of the Board at AMRRIC’s 2019 stakeholder event to announce AMRRIC’s support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart calls for a First Nations Voice in the Australian Constitution and a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise a process of ‘agreement-making’ and ‘truth-telling’ between government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a non-partisan organisation that works in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, AMRRIC is proud to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
AMRRIC is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of both animals and people in rural and remote Indigenous communities. For Australia’s First Peoples, reconciliation and recognition are essential requisites for improved health and wellbeing. We believe that the statement offers powerful, yet considered solutions in a roadmap toward reconciliation, meaningful recognition and an enhanced national identity.
On the 25th October 2019, the AMRRIC Board, as part of their activities associated with the Annual General Meeting, hosted a networking event with local stakeholders including program partners, volunteers and members. At this event the Board had invited Director (former) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group member, Christine Ross, to announce AMRRIC’s support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
Unplanned, but poignantly, the same day marked the closing of the tourist climb at Uluru, in respect and recognition of the traditional law of the Anangu, the Traditional Owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta and the surrounding land.
Christine, an Arrernte/Kaytetye desert woman, who was born in Alice Springs, notably shared with everyone what a special day this was, for the Anangu people, for herself, and for Australia’s First Peoples who would celebrate the importance of the supported decision.
