Tiwi Training Program Aug 09

Overview
In response to a need articulated by Tiwi residents and Shire Council, this training program was developed in cooperation with AMRRIC, The Ark Animal Hospital, Tiwi Shire Council, and Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities Research Program.

Purpose
  • To develop animal management service delivery to the Tiwi Islands
  • To provide training and support to local Environmental Health workers
  • To conduct a training program to enable the safe and appropriate use of Ivermectin by local Environmental Health workers.
  • To enhance the Environmental Health workers’ ability to conduct animal management operations safely and effectively by discussing dog behaviour.
Summary
  • Over the three days of the training program, nine Environmental Health workers from Pirlangimpi, Nguiu, and Milikapiti successfully learnt and practised how to deliver an Ivermectin anti-parasitic dog health program.
  • During the program, these men treated 62 dogs in Pirlangimpi and 88 dogs in Nguiu.
  • The participants were enthusiastic and dedicated throughout and are eager to continue the work started, as well as further develop their animal management skills.
