Talk about an outstanding effort! The Canberra Vet Mob spent a week in the hot and dusty Utopia Homelands, 250kms northeast of Alice Springs, desexing more than one hundred dogs! This is a desperately needed service as there are literally hundreds of dogs in the surrounding communities that previously did not have a vet servicing them. It is the generosity and hard work of these volunteers that have turned the animal management situation around. This was the third visit over the last 12 months during which an amazing 404 dogs have been desexed in total! The change brought by all the hard work was starting to become apparent with far fewer puppies and juvenile dogs seen in all the camps and a marked improvement in body condition and skin condition apparent in the majority of dogs. The reception from the local Indigenous community was very positive and some people were happy to have their dogs taken for surgery but sending them off with “You bring him back?!”
Credit has to go to Naomi Trelor, Kathryn McKinley, Bill Taylor, Louise Nicholls and Michael Archinal for this visit and many others for the previous efforts! Thanks to Brian Radovic from Barkly Shire Council whose support was essential to get the whole show moving. Well done and keep up the inspiring work! You are making a real difference.
